What is Woke Church?

The Woke Church Interdisciplinary Think Tank is a collective of professionals and practitioners who apply gospel-centered principles to meet pressing needs in our urban community. We seek to partner with individuals and organizations to identify areas of greatest need, establish protocols for intervention and prevention, and develop strategies for lasting and transformational change.

The Lord God has told us what is right and what he demands: “See that justice is done, let mercy be your first concern, and humbly obey your God.”

Micah 6:8

Education

We serve as resources for the Epiphany family and the larger community as we work to improve educational outcomes for our city’s children. We seek to assist teachers, educational leaders, and volunteers in classroom management, cultural context and competence, and parent advocacy, as well as provide educator necessities.

Law & Criminal Justice

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:4)

We seek to prevent and intervene in the school-to-prison pipeline by providing criminal record expungement services, legal clinics, and violence prevention services.

Behavioral Sciences

There is a severe lack of consistent, affordable, reliable, and high-quality counseling services in many urban communities. The presence and high incidence of chronic trauma in the form of racism, incarceration, disrupted family units, violence, etc. makes for a critical need for trauma-informed care. We seek to eradicate barriers to mental health services by providing support groups and other activities to build bridges and lay the foundation for long-term, authentic relationships with members of our community.

Community Outreach

We wish to build bridges in our community and work to reflect the image of Christ in all of our interactions in the North Philadelphia community. To that end, we engage in ongoing outreach efforts to extend the reach of Epiphany Fellowship beyond the church walls.

Health

Many urban communities have limited access to health resources and affordable and nutritious food. These issues are compounded by a lack of health education regarding the management and prevention of common diseases and a history of racial discrimination on the part of health care providers. We seek to have individuals and communities radically transformed by participating in health fairs and serving as an educational resource on issues related to health.

Economics

Every person is a divinely appointed steward over resources. The economy is essentially the product of stewards interacting with one another. We seek to employ a gospel centered approach to economics based on love of people and a desire to see them gain economic wisdom by offering education on debt reduction, business and legal counseling, and home and business ownership.

Arts & Entertainment

Art is everywhere and how we express and create is an important aspect of humanity and a reflection of our Creator. Our main goal is to educate our communities about the benefits and opportunities in the arts and entertainment industry.

Biblical Theology

We seek to promote a biblical theology of the Imago Dei as it relates to issues of race, church history and theological education. We wish to collaborate with theologians, historians and scholars to provide resources for inner-city churches that is biblically and historically accurate within the urban context.
